For 68 years, Conway Precision has operated at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge engineering. While many firms in the region have faded away, Conway Precision has sustained its reputation by specialising in the "impossible"—the high-stakes, high-accuracy work that keeps global giants in the air and on the move. Under the leadership of Managing Director Garry Fisher, the company has transitioned from its roots as a family-owned business into a modern powerhouse of technical problem-solving.

Beyond Drawings: Engineering a Solution

Conway Precision’s core strength lies in its identity as more than just a machine shop. While they function as expert toolmakers, their true specialty is the dual-threat capability of design and manufacture. They don't just work to a standard set of blueprints; they manufacture a solution for a specific feature or challenge. When a client faces a complex manufacturing challenge that standard tools cannot measure or hold, Conway Precision steps in to design a bespoke fixture from the ground up. "We don't just work to drawings," Garry explains. "We manufacture a solution for a feature... it’s designed to work." This "engineer’s brain" approach to problem-solving separates them from high-volume shops, as they possess the rare ability to turn a conceptual challenge into a physical, high-accuracy reality.

High-Precision Metrology and Gauging

The crown jewel of Conway Precision’s capability is their specialisation in High Precision Gauges. In sectors like Aerospace, where tolerances are measured in microns, there is no room for error. Conway Precision’s work on wing assembly components is a masterclass in Metrology. These specific gauges are used to set the profile for rivets in aircraft wings, ensuring every component is seated with absolute perfection before it takes to the sky. These tools are so accurate they can be unfathomable in their complexity. After firms across England failed to produce these parts to the required standard, they eventually landed in the Midlands, and specifically, with Conway Precision. “One of our customers tried to source this work all over the UK" says Garry. "We created a process where [the parts] are all superb... now it’s our contract.”

A Legacy of Mastery and Modern Integration

The workforce at Conway Precision represents over half a century of accumulated skills, a deep-bench of expertise that allows them to handle materials and tolerances that would intimidate less experienced teams. From bespoke fixture design—creating the "skeleton" that holds complex parts during production—to specialist toolmaking for high-durability industrial applications, their breadth of knowledge is vast. Garry is passionate about preserving this expertise, noting, "We’ve got 50 years of skills that can and should be passed on." They are currently bridging this legacy with modern technology, having recently integrated new CNC machinery to handle large-scale projects for their partners. This combination of veteran intuition and modern CNC capability allows them to solve "black holes" in the supply chain that others simply cannot fill.

Resilience as a Resource

While a major industrial fire recently tested the company's infrastructure, it served more as a demonstration of their operational tenacity than a permanent setback. Rather than folding, Conway Precision used the event as a catalyst to modernise and refocus. The fire proved that while buildings and machinery can be damaged, the intellectual property and technical intuition held by the Conway Precision team are indestructible. Garry recalls the intensity of the recovery, noting that despite the street’s power being blown, the team were back at work and looking to re-build by the following Monday morning, a feat nothing short of miraculous when one considers the total destruction the fire caused to the sister site.

They remain a vital link in the UK manufacturing supply chain—a firm that prides itself on being the place people go when everyone else has said "it can’t be done." By maintaining these rare skills in the heart of the Midlands, Conway Precision ensures that high-accuracy engineering remains a British stronghold.

New Factory in Birmingham Unveiled by Lord Mayor of Birmingham

Birmingham based company, Conway Precision Engineering Ltd held a grand Open Day for customers and supporters on Tuesday 7th May, to celebrate the unveiling of their new factory.

The new premises, in Witton, which is three times bigger than its current site, was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Yvonne Mosquito.

Managing Director Garry Fisher said: “We have made a huge investment for the future growth of the company and have also taken on new apprentices. We have a number of highly skilled employees who have unique skills and experience that you don’t come across very easily, so we need to ensure we are investing in the next generation, and the apprenticeship route enables us to do that and to increase productivity.”

The Open Day, which included a tour of the new factory, and True Position Robotics attended by long standing customers of Conway, including representatives from Rolls Royce, HSBC, JCB, Jaguar Land Rover and many more. Staff from the charity Parkinson’s UK was also present, as the company also announced their new charity partnership.

Garry said: “Our expansion plans have been very well received by our customers, they saw our investment as a real vote of confidence in the industry and was all really excited to show them the new premises at the Open Day”.

The business, design's and manufacture gauges, jigs and machining fixtures and project engineering solutions for the automotive and aerospace industries began nearly 60 years ago behind a butcher’s shop in Birmingham and has gone from strength to strength, working side by side with some of the Midlands biggest and well-known brands and since a management buyout two years ago supported by HSBC has continued to invest in new equipment and people.

Championing our Local Engineering Eco-System

In an age of globalisation, big data, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things, … Sometimes its just great to have a face-to-face chat, share and challenge ideas and collaborate to develop better solutions. I have been working with Conway Precision Engineering for the best part of twenty years now – and it’s always been a pleasure. It’s simply a business you want to work with.

In the past couple of years Garry (MD) and his team have been growing the business and on Tuesday had the official opening of their new factory. It was a grand affair, with lots of people who have been helping them including HSBC Bank, Birmingham City Council and Made in the Midlands.

There were also lots of blue-chip companies who have benefitted from their work – including (in no particular order) Rolls-Royce, Mercedes AMG, Lear, Jaguar and Land Rover, Meggitt, Gardner Aerospace, JCB, …

It was an honour to showcase some of the solutions we have created, helped by them. Their idea was to balance the traditional jig and gauge work they do, with True Position Robotics Ltd, TPR (www.tpr.solutions) advanced engineering work – where time and time again they manufacture and support us in our products.

The guest of honour was Cllr Yvonne Mosquito the Lord Mayor of Birmingham. Here she is interacting with a demo we made using a collaborative robot supplied by the local office of KUKA Robotics in Wednesbury (www.kuka.com). Conway have made the robot tool using Rapid Prototyping. This is part of a solution we promote in the UK from Belgium technology company FRS Robotics (www.frsrobotics.com). Videos were shown of their process for automotive assembly inspection of “closures” (doors, bonnets, tailgates, …) This uses a collaborative robot (from KUKA) and the FRS adaptive control development.

The robot “feels” its way around assembly and feedback from an ultrasonic sensor is used to adjust the position of the robot to the joint to ensure all the measurements are optimal. This inspection proves the joints are good (will not corrode) – or highlights the need for an intervention. Its currently going into production for the new Audi electric SUV.

Here I am with Garry, explaining our solution for geometric inspection. Its basis is an optical coordinate measurement machine working just from infrared light. But it serves the same purpose as a physical X,Y,Z,Rx,Ry,Rz measurement machine. This is developed by Northern Digital Inc (www.ndigital.com) in Canada. The sensor used to acquire the surface geometry is the latest blue light laser from Nikon Metrology (www.nikonmetrology.com), that is made in the East Midlands. We integrate and resell both of these companies’ products used in our solution.

My business has integrated the devices together to create a complete measurement system based around an innovative housing we designed/produced. Conway not only machined the parts, created the rapid prototyping parts, but also involved in the different phases of prototyping. This is the first working model, with two other systems in build (a demo system and a customer sale).

Videos of another of our solutions, which we call ARC+ (Adaptive Robot Control Plus) was shown. This is for high accuracy robotic drilling and machining. Our latest version (Generation 4.0) is being used in an aerospace company. Conway have been involved in this task for many years, not only in machining – but in assembly and pneumatics (and the odd brainstorming session!)

Here is the Conway team with the VIP guests (although I cannot see June!). Perhaps that’s because of the Aston Villa livery - and yes, Aston Villa sent visitors as well! (the factory is really close to Villa Park).

But whilst the day was all about the new factory opening, there was time for a talk from Parkinson’s UK (who are the Charity Conway support). As ever Garry and his team give generously with their time, as well as their actions. I wish them every success in the new building (and hope some of that rubs off to TPR). We are part of a community, and days like this are very uplifting.
